Tax Day and Tax Scams

Tax Day 2018 is tomorrow.  And locally, residents continue to get the phone call from scammers that say you must pay a fine related to taxes or you will be arrested.  The most recent report to the Wilkes Sheriff's Office was from a Wilkesboro woman last week. Thousands of people have lost millions of dollars and their personal information to tax scams. Scammers use the regular mail, telephone, or email to set up individuals, businesses, payroll and tax professionals. The IRS doesn't initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information.  And the IRS will not call and demand payment by any type of pre-paid card.  For more information on filing taxes or tax scams, visit
